THE CONCEPT
The Zone diet was developed by Barry Sears, phD. The diet is
built on the 40-30-30 meal plan, which insists that meals be prepared
with a ratio of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% fat. This
is achieved in the diet by using "blocks" which are
units that contain the proper ratio of these calories. By following
this regimen while using the recommendations on how many blocks
you require per day, you will lose weight.
THE PLAN
The plan is followed through the numerous Zone books, which detail
every food and describe their conversion into "blocks".
You build a meal by combining 1 block from each of the 3 groups
of calories, giving you the "ideal" combination. The
plan details how many blocks you should eat every day, and gives
recommendations on how to spread them out during the day. The
average user will consume 5 or 6 "meals" a day, including
breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 3 snacks.
Preparation can be tedious, for a meal you might be preparing
various units of measurement such as 1/2 an apple, 8 oz. of lean
chicken, 1/2 cup of lentils, etc. You realize after a short period
of time on the diet that you will be spending a large portion
of your time figuring out the sizes and combinations for each
meal.
Any weight loss on this diet will be difficult to maintain once
the diet is no longer followed. Without the strict calorie counting
regimen developed in the plan, users will be lost and most likely
will fall into the same eating habits they once possessed.
Staying in "the Zone" is one of the hardest diet plans
to undertake, unless you are prone to enjoying scenarios that
require strict guidelines. If you can handle the calculations
and the need to be completely aware of what you're eating, this
plan will definitely help you lose weight.
