THE CONCEPT
This diet is very similar to the Perricone
Diet, they both stress healthy eating as a means to a healthier
body. While Perricone stresses healthy skin, Pritikin is more
concerned with overall health of the body. Foods rich in oils,
fatty acids, complex carbohydrates are important. The diet is
meant to help with heart disease and cholesterol, as shown by
the reversal of Dr. Pritikin's personal reversal of his own life-threatening
heart disease through the eating habits encouraged in his diet.
THE PLAN
The Pritikin Longevity Center is a diet "resort" located
in Florida. The goal of this center is to work with experts in
diet, exercise, meal preparation, and more. Together, visitors
and experts develop life and diet changes that implement the focus
of the diet.
Yet the majority of people following Pritikin do so through the
use of his books, which tell readers the guidelines to follow
to be able to eat large portions and fill up on low-calorie foods.
His diet is a low-fat, high carb diet. It is very healthy, and
is easier to follow than most other diets that require calorie
counting and other calculations.
The plan requires that users choose foods appropriate to the
stage they are in. The book will explain certain aspects of your
meals, such as "eat 4 ounces of fish" or "drink
or eat 2 servings of dairy products". Users are given the
means of knowing the foods that are low in simple carbs, the foods
rich in the fatty acids that are recommended. The goal is to plan
a full meal with foods low in calories per pound. That way people
can prepare larger portions, while not gaining weight due to the
low fat, low calorie content of the food.
This diet is very healthy. It prevents or reverses heart and
cholesterol problems, helps keep a healthy colon, prostate, and
promotes an overall higher level of health. The diet does not
provide specific meal plans, only guidelines on meals, the rest
is up to you. Though it is not a "weight loss" diet,
significant weight loss and management is achieved by following
the plan.
