WEIGHT LOSS - OBESITY - FACTORS CAUSING OBESITY

OBESITY

FACTORS

Obesity is considered an epidemic by the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, or CDC. The government of the United States is concerned by the rise in overweight Americans. A society that becomes and remains overweight or obese can cost the government billions of dollars in health care alone, not to mention many other consequences of obesity.

Obesity is not an overnight phenomenon, it happened over time and was caused by many factors. This page will discuss a few in brief.

Obesity is caused primarily by an imbalance in energy. The amount of calories you ingest is not supposed to outweigh the amount of calories you burn through physical ezercise. This is the primary cause, but it also is determined by a variety of factors, such as your genes, behavior, culture, environment, metabolism, and economic situation.

The imbalance of calories is due mainly to the "conveniences" of today's society. For instance, people used to walk to places within a certain vicinity of their homes. Nowadays, people tend to drive themselves to most places, even to the store if it's down the street! This removal of any casual exercising that would normally reduce the amount of calories that remain unused is a drastic cause of obesity in North America.

The way food is purchased now, with convenience and cost being huge determining factors. People consume mass amounts of fast food, sodas, and other sugary foods. These foods are convenient, yet they possess horrible nutritional value. Also, the portion sizes have increased dramatically for food bought at stores or in restaurants. People are bombarded with choices, and the easiest and cheapest are the ones that contain many useless calories.

Genetics can play a role in obesity, giving some people dispositions to obesity, with glandular problems and/or slower metabolisms. Some people suffer from such diseases as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome which can make obesity impossible to avoid.
