CONSEQUENCES
Obesity would not be such a huge problem in North America if
it didn't cause so many negative consequences. The consequences
affect the people who suffer from obesity with many physical problems.
The effects can be felt in the economy as well.
People with a BMI of over 25 are at risk for many diseases and
ailments. These include: high blood pressure, hypertension, high
blood cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, glucose intolerance, coronary
heart disease, Angina Pectoris, heart failure, stroke, gallstones,
gout, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, endometrial,
breast, prostate, and colon cancers, menstrual irregularities,
infertility, irregular ovulation, bladder control problems, depression,
eating disorders, distorted body image, and low self-esteem.
The effects can be felt heavily on body image. People who suffer
from obesity have low self-esteem and can become suicidal. They
tend to not participate in many social situations. They can become
reclusive. Obesity affects every aspect of the life of an obese
person.
Economically speaking, obesity and overweight people have added
dramatically to the health care costs in America. In 1998, the
cost to insurance companies has been estimated as high as $78.5
billion dollars. This has many ramifications, as if you look at
the numbers and put it simply, with less overweight and obese
people, we would have more money to spend on many other parts
of our society.
