Research reports says eating more fruits and vegetables and cereals may help people live longer and healthy. Healthy 60 year old person may gain an extra year on others of his age by sticking closely to a regime that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits and cereals then a moderate to high intake of fish and unsaturated fats means olive oil. Occasional consumption of dairy products and meat and moderate amount of alcohol , mostly wine, very few saturated fats are the other ingredients of a diet which has made numerous health claims in recent years.

The virtues are confirmed in a study of nearly 75000 people over 60 in nine European countries. The effect is greatest in Spain and Greece and absent in Germany and Netherlands and Itlay. But researchers say that the diet cannot be considered as Mediterranean. The researchers believe the results endorse a modified Mediterranean diet. The study was part of European project lookig mainly at cancer and nutrition. The scientists concluded that a diet resembling the Mediterranean one was associated with a lower overall death rate.
