The finding that fish-rich diets suppress weight-gain-promoting leptin is important. But, as it turns out, the leptin-suppressing effect of fish may not fully explain its role in controlling weight.Scientists have known for some time that diets rich in seafood were associated with better weight control. Fish and shellfish contain high-quality protein and other essential nutrients, are low in saturated fat, and contain omega-3 fatty acids. A well-balanced diet that includes a variety of fish and shellfish can contribute to heart health and children's proper growth and development. Other vitamins and minerals found in oily fish include vitamins A, which is needed for vision in dim light, as well as for healthy skin, and vitamin D, which is needed for healthy bones. Fish is also a good source of selenium, which helps protect cells from damage.
Pancreatic cancer patients, profound weight loss will often shorten their survival. The study demonstrated that taking fish oils helped pancreatic cancer patients gain weight. These patients ate better and felt stronger this is the most important. In the laboratory, fish oils appear to block the effects of cancer on muscle breakdown. We also know that several of the compounds that cancers release cause cachexia, a general weight loss and wasting of muscle mass. Blocking the effects of these compounds may ultimately be of further benefit in the fight against cancer. Everyone should eat at least two portions of fish per week (one of which should be oily) because all fish has many health benefits.
Nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of mercury. For most people, the risk from mercury by eating fish and shellfish is not a health concern. Yet, some fish and shellfish contain higher levels of mercury that may harm an unborn baby or young child's developing nervous system.
