THE CONCEPT
The Mayo Clinic Diet is a low carbohydrate, high protein and
fat diet. The diet states that you should eat as much protein
and fat as you wish, until you're stuffed actually. It also includes
a grapefruit with most meals. The diet's name has been call for
controversy as the real Mayo Clinic had nothing to do with this
diet, does not support it, actually discourages it.
THE PLAN
The diet is meant to last for 2 1/2 months, during this time
you will depend on fat and protein for your meals. This produces
the same effect as the Atkins diet,
causing ketosis in the body, switching
it from a carb burning engine to a fat-burning one. The diet adds
a grapefruit with almost every meal in order to increase fat-burning.
The problem with this diet is the same as with many others, it
deprives the body of the benefits from carbs. Eating large amounts
of protein and no carbs makes it harder for the body to supply
energy to the body's functions. People may feel lightheaded, and
have trouble thinking without carbs. Ketosis also puts a lot of
strain on the kidneys as they attempt to rid the body of the excess.
Eating alot of fat is also harmful for your body. Animal fat
is consumed when eating large amounts of protein, and high fat
consumption leads to high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems.
The grapefruit aspect is worthless, as it cannot be shown that
grapefruit possesses ANY fat-burning qualities. However, grapefruits
are a healthy fruit, full of vitamins and beta-carotine. They
are not helpful in the way the diet claims therefore it is not
necessary.
