LOW-CARB
DIETS
INTRODUCTION
Low carb diets are a huge fad spread across the continent
and the rest of the world. The are popular thanks in part to the
Atkins dieting craze, as well as the fast initial weight loss experienced
by many. However, the low carb diet contradicts many recommendations
made by reputable government-controlled sources. The weight loss
provided by these diets is said to occur by unhealthy means, and
the lasting effects are in question.
POPULAR DIETS
There are several low-carb diets in use these days,
including the Atkins Approach, the South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet,
the Scarsdale Diet, and the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet. These are
all very popular diets, which claim to offer amazing weight loss
that is manageable and sustainable. However, evidence is pointing
in other directions.
THE CONCEPT
It seems as simple as anything - don't eat many carbs.
Yet the diets can become much more complicated, as they usually
entail phases of the diet, requiring different phases to consist
of different levels of carb intake. Diets give limits on the carbs
you eat, and require users to monitor the sources of carbohydrates
and the quantities of these foods that are consumed.
NOTES
Low carb diets switch the body's metabolism to not
rely on carbs for energy and instead on fat. This also reduces the
levels of insulin in the body, thus combatting obesity.
Also, the initial weight loss experienced by many is widely believed
to be caused by water loss. There is no indication that any startling
weight loss in the initial phases is a healthy one, the long-term
benefits of a low-carb diet have yet to be proven.
