KETOSIS

Ketosis is a state the body enters when on a carbohydrate-restrictive diet. The actual name for the phase is benign dietary ketosis, and it occurs when the body cannot find enough glucose from carbs in your diet, and switches over to a fat-burning metabolism. The body releases fatty acids into the bloodstream, which are converted into ketones that are used by the muscles, the the brain, and other organs as energy.

Ketosis is the way low carbohydrate diets burn away fat. Since the body is feeding on the fat you are consuming as well as the fat already present in your body, you do lose weight. However, many scientists warn that as the body expells all the excess ketones, it puts considerable strain on your kidneys, and can actually be life-threatening.
