THE CONCEPT
By cutting out carbs, high-protein diets claim users can lose
weight quickly, easily, and without much work. These diets are
made even more atractive by the claim that you may eat as much
protein and fat as you wish. However, there are many problems
with high protein diets. There is weight loss but your body suffers
on many levels.
THE PROBLEMS
First off, the body requires calories from protein, fat, and
carbohydrates. The balance within your body depends on them. You
absorb different vitamins and minerals from each group, and when
you cut one group out, you are neglecting certain elements that
your body needs. People who cut carbs out of their diet run the
risk of becoming deficient of several vitamins and minerals.
A diet rich in protein tends to be extremely high in animal protein
being consumed. Studies have shown that animal protein can be
harmful in larger amounts, it is known to cause higher cholesterol.
Meat also tends to be higher in fat content, therefore making
you susceptible to a high cholesterol, heart disease, and generally
unhealthy heart.
When your body switches over to a fat-burning system, as is the
case when on a high protein diet, your body produces an abundance
of ketones to provide your body with
energy. Your body then fights to expel the excess ketones, and
this puts much strain on your kidneys, to the point that it has
been fatal.
