DIETING - NUTRITION - FOODS

FOODS

TYPES OF FOODS

As previously stated, foods are split up into categories related to their major components. Because of this, these groups share a mojority of their nuritional value in terms of vitamins and minerals, mainly because they share the same sources. For example, meats & alternatives share the fact that they provide the bulk of our protein. The meat part is self-evident, but beyond just the fact that they would all be meats, fish provides us with certain oils and fatty acids that beef would not. Breads and cereals are made from grains, oats, etc. They give fiber, yet the bulk of their calories are carbohydrates. Almost all foods in this category follow this, but still have their own nutrition to offer. Each group has certain nutrients to provide you with, which makes it important to add variety to your diet, including a balance of the food groups.

In addition to the four food groups, you have foods that do not fit into a category, and then other foods that would fit, but are not considered foods to fulfill your daily requirement from the group. For instance, where would you classify mustard? Mustard is a food, but you would not consider a tablespoon of it a serving of vegetables or of grains. Then you have a food like butter, which is definitely a milk product, however, not recommended to fulfill any daily requirements. So in addition to variety, it is important to distinguish foods by whether they are healthy choices or not.
