SETTING GOALS
Setting personal goals for yourself is a very tough subject.
First of all, people tend to set goals for themselves that are
past their capabilities. Just deciding to lose 50 pounds when
you are 180 is not a reasonable goal. Your body has a different
ideal weight that you might have. It needs to have a minimum healthy
weight in order to be functioning optimally. So weighing 115 might
not be a good thing for you.
The reality is, with exercise it is only possible to lose around
1 or 2 pounds per week. Anything more is due to poor eating and
can be very unhealthy. Your goals should take into account where
you are right now, where you'd like to be, and in how long you
want to be there. So, if your ideal weight is 130 and you are
180 now, you might want to set a goal such as "I want to
lose 50 pounds over the next 8 months. This allows leeway for
the weeks where you won't lose weight, for minor setbacks along
the way, and the most important part of it is that it is easily
reachable with a little commitment. A major problem for a lot
of goals that are set is that they put too much pressure on the
person, and their motivation is shattered when they do not reach
their goal.
