THE CONCEPT
Exchange Plans is a dieting option that is based on balancing
the components of your meals to achieve the optimal levels of
carbs, protein, fat and calories in your diet. The plan can be
followed through one of the many books covering the diet, it revolves
mainly around using the guide and eating according to its recommendations.
THE PLAN
The plan runs in a similar way to the
Zone, by allowing users to choose from a large number of options
for every meal. Exchange Plans is also used to an extent within
the Weight Watchers diet
plan. Within the guide, foods are listed while including nutritional
information, and also describes the amount of the food that is
equivalent to a meal block. The foods are also categorized by
what kind of calories you are consuming when you eat them, such
as protein, fat, or carbohydrates.
When it is time to plan a meal, you consult the plan to determine
what foods should be included. The types of foods you are asked
to prepare will vary, but will generally consist of balanced amounts
from each category. For example, for one lunch, you might be asked
to eat a meal with 1 portion of protein, 2 breads/cereals, and
1 portion of fat. Then, from this, you will determine what foods
you would like to include from the required groups. If you use
the given amounts making up the quantity described in the plan,
you will have prepared a balanced meal with proper nutrient/vitamin
content.
